Captain Thunderbolt (Frederick Wordsworth Ward)

Renowned for his escape from Cockatoo Island and for being the longest roaming Bushranger in Australian history. Ward robbed mailmen, travellers, inns, stores and stations across much of Northern New South Wales for over 6 years. On the 25th May 1870 Ward was shot and killed. He had spent his last few hours at a pub being served drinks at gunpoint. The publicans had urged him to escape as they knew the police were coming.
